During ventures into difficult terrain, the driver is supported by the standard-fit low-range ratio integrated in the transfer case. If the transmission is set to “neutral”, a press of the low-range button at speeds below 40 km/h is all that is required to optimise the transmission of the engine torque. In this way, it is possible to benefit from greater tractive force and improved control when operating at lower speeds.
Working in harmony with the Four-Wheel Electronic Traction System (4ETS), three fully locking differentials and a synchromesh transfer case with off-road ratio, the G-Class four-wheel drive system provides optimum traction at all wheels, along with enhanced handling and stability.
Three electro-mechanically lockable differentials allow the G-Class to make headway in low range mode even when only one of its wheels has traction. In tough terrain, buttons on the dashboard allow the front, centre and rear differentials to be locked sequentially according to your traction requirements.
